Objectives
The objectives of this module are to:
- Present the totality of design activity for the whole product and process life cycle, the control and integration of different technical groups, and show how and when the process can be influenced to improve maintainability and reliability (M&R).
- Provide perspectives of design and design constraints in order to identify the most appropriate ways in which design can be improved with respect to M&R.
Learning Outcome
On completion of this module, delegates will be able to:
- Reducing projected maintenance time and costs through design modifications directed at maintenance simplifications.
- Using maintainability data to estimate item availability or unavailability.
- Undertake design evaluations at the organisation, system, equipment, component, and information systems levels that include maintainability, reliability and performance parameters.
- Evaluate performance with respect to M&R and take decisions to effect change and make improvements through design.
- Set up a feedback system to present suitable data and experience to improve the M&R of future designs.
- Appreciate the human factors that influence maintainability.

Related Topics
- Repair techniques and methods (1.3)
Objectives
Where the method, technique aims?
- The methods and techniques covered here aim at developing a closed loop design methodology of feeding information from maintenance to design. This is achieved through analysis of failures and generation of lessons that can prevent such failures from re-occurring. The emphasis will be on generic lessons that can be applied to other similar cases.
What are the benefits for the company? (why to use it?)
- The main benefits of such approach are that it will help to improve design of systems and artifacts as well as improved working practice. Currently maintenance domain is an environment of rich data related to failures. There seems to be no formal methods of feeding back this data to the designers of the systems. This module will help users to appreciate different Case Studies related to failures in both maintenance and design functions, and discuss lessons learnt.
Are there any preconditions, limitations?
- It provides cases from some industries. However, it doe not cover all industries.
Learning objectives for the trainees?
- After reading this module you will be able to analyze failure using advanced techniques in maintenance and reliability in order to extract lessons for prevention and improvement.
Learning Outcome
Upon completion of this chapter the trainee will be able to:
- Appreciate maintenance and reliability related terms
- Use techniques for fault fining and analysis
Prerequisites / Related Topics:
Related Topics: Maintenance involvement in design, procurement and operation of assets, and, Condition monitoring
Objectives
- Maintenance and reliability in terms of its strategies, goals and results are critical for every successful company. Maintenance is a unique business process. To be successfully managed, it requires an approach different from other business processes. This module provides a framework for managing maintenance with options that allow decision makers to select the most successful ways to manage maintenance. Measuring, comparing and improving maintenance practice underpins the success of the whole business process.
Learning Outcome
Upon completion of this chapter the trainee will be able to:
- Appreciate maintenance and reliability related strategies and goals
- Decide on their uses and limitations
